Day 5 brought me to 2164.2 miles.
I drove 508.7 miles in 9.5 hours today. I left Evansville, WY at 29 degrees with ice everywhere, a little nervous about black ice and hoping I would be out of the mtns. soon? There was no black ice, however, the Utah mtns. were quite impressive looming high above me on both sides! Signs and truckers @ rest areas warned of delays in Salt Lake City, UT, therefore, I took an alternate route around via Hwy 84 to Ogden, UT.
Exiting on Hwy 84 my heart skipped a beat! Wow! The mtns. were massive, however, the road winded right between them so all was OK. The drive on Hwy 84 was quite beautiful with snow covered peaks and meadows at the base as I drove to Ogden, UT. A nice river flowed alonside the road adding to the beauty. Leaving Salt Lake, after dodging many detours and road closures and high winds I headed out across the Salt Flats which are very beautiful. They are almost blinding -- being so white.
Leaving Salt Lake the drive became much easier with hundreds of miles of open highway through the desert surrounded by mtns. creating for beautiful scenery. We kept running into another couple @ rest areas driving a Coachmen too and when we stopped for the day they pulled into the same RV park! Jokes were made that since they drove a Coachmen they had to follow Max since he matched the logo on their RV too! We talked at length about PKD and my cross-country trip when they asked what PKD was -- seeing the graphics on the RV. More public awareness of PKD! I arrived @ Winnemucca, NV in the middle of the Nevada desert @ an RV park that is in a beautiful valley at the base of the mtns. Casinos are everywhere, however, After almost 10 hours of driving just setting up the RV took all my energy. The Casinos will have to wait for another trip.
Today I hope to land in Pleasanton, CA where my best friend is and will stop for the night. There is a RV magazine based there so, if there is time, I hope to contact them about my story? San Francisco/Bay Area is next stop where I will pitch the TV and newspaper media and meet with Pocketmail, the sponsor for my e-mail making this e-mail to you possible! Thanks Pocketmail! The Road trip continues...
