Devon's Walk - Hiking the Appalachian Trail for Brain Injury Research

"Everyone on the Appalachian Trail uses PocketMail. I couldn't have kept in touch with my supporters without it! Thank you" - Devon Struck

Purpose: To raise money to benefit Brain Injury Research.
Goal: Devon Struck plans on raising $22,000 in aid for Brain Injury Research.
Route:The Appalachian Trail spans 2,170 miles from Georgia to Maine.

Devon is Done!

Devon completed her journey to Mt. Katahdin on Oct 1, 2003.

Devon raised $24,900 for Brain injury research.

Devon recently contacted us to let us know of her hike to raise money and awareness of Brain Injury. Here's what she had to say:

My friend Stephanie was hit by an SUV while driving home during a snowy night. She has been left severly brain injured. I wanted to do something to help her and after reading a book called "A Walk For Sunshine" by Jeff Alt, I realized I could combine my lifelong dream of hiking the Appalachian Trail with helping Stephanie. I contacted the Brain Injury Association of America and told them I wanted to raise funds for research. My goal is $22,000 (a little more than $10 a mile). I have raised almost $14,000 so far. All of the money I have raised has gone to research, none to fund my trip which should cost me about $4,000 after equipment. In addition to raising funds I have been trying raise awareness. I have been working with my local school system, presenting to elementary and middle school students about both helmet and seatbelt safety but also about my hike. I have a website that will be updated thanks to my support crew at home and of course the donations made by both Pocketmail and Verizon Wireless, so that students can follow me on my hike.

The Appalachian Trail (AT) is 2,170 miles long, goes through 14 states from Georgia to Maine. It will take me about 4-6 months to hike the whole thing. Every year about 1,000 people attempt a thru-hike (hiking it all in one season), only about 16% succeed. My hike is a metaphor for the daily struggles I see Stephanie face.

Devon is keeping a website to keep track of her hike. She is updating her website using the PocketMail E-mail system. You can view her website at www.devonswalk.org.

Update: Devon has now raised over $18,000 for Brain Injury Research. Please visit her website for the latest information detailing her progress.

More Updates: Devon has been interviewed by The Caledonian Record about her trip. She is currently suffering from lyme disease but she still plans to finish the trek by late September or early in October. Click here to read the article.

Final Day: Just a reminder, as you go through your busy day today, Tuesday September 30, that Devon Struck left Georgia 6.5 months ago to hike 2,170 miles on behalf of a young woman who couldn't - and today, she makes her final trek to the peak of Mt. Katahdin in Maine! Thank you all for continuing to believe in Devon. She could not have made it without your financial, emotional, and friendly support.
