Kiwis on Bikes - From England To New Zealand

Purpose: To travel from England to New Zealand at a pace akin to travellers from a bygone era. To experience different cultures and customs which fulfills their globetrotting natures.

Goal: Their initial goal was to enjoy the pleasure of travel and the obvious challenges it would place in our way. Whilst cycling in the solitude of the Western Tibetian plateau they reflected on how many people they personally knew who had died from cancer, including Christine's Mother whilst they were in Iran. With a figure of 35 between the two of them, they felt the urge to do something proactively. Upon reaching Nepal in 2001 they heard the news of two other friends (aged only 36 & 38) passing away from cancer.

By December 2001 they had everything in place to start raising funds and awareness of the Gray Cancer Institute.

Route:After leaving England they crossed the following countries to reach Australia where they are presently cycling. France, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, China, Tibet, Nepal, India back into Nepal and Tibet but this time to the east into China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and now in Australia then onto their home country, New Zealand.

Christine and Malcolm Clark have been cycling all over the world to raise funds and awareness for the Gray Cancer Institute. We had a chance to catch up with them and ask them a few questions.

How did you hear about PocketMail?

We heard about someone in a campground having a device that sent and received emails over a telephone. We found them and learnt about Pocketmail and went out and ordered one straight away from Australian Post.

How can people interested in your cause learn more?

By logging on to our website www.kiwisonbikes.com we have a dedicated page setup which gives information about the Gray Cancer Institute and how to donate.

How can someone help you or help this extraordinary cause?

By donating money to the Gray Cancer Institute making reference to the "kiwisonbikes" with the payment as we wish to raise a $ per every kilometre travelled. This trip is entirely self-funded and all money received goes directly to the Gray Cancer Institute.

Alternatively any business or company who could hold a donation box on their premises, collect and forward monies received to Grays would help also.

Any real-world advice for anyone trying or doing the same sort of thing (or something similar)?

Don't try to over achieve on your goals or expectations. For us this trip was the result of 13 years of previous travel by various independent means but mainly using bicycles. We have seen so many people try and follow unrealistic schedules and fail. Travel is about enjoying and experiencing not just "ticking the boxes". We draw on alot of experience and are not as demanding as most people seem to be these days.

A journey can be as little as an hour, day , week, month or even a year.
