Santa Cruz NBG Fest
http://www.bikeroute.com/SCNBGFest

The Santa Cruz NBG Fest is one of the world's largest events for cross-country and trans-coastal cyclists and will draw cyclists from all over the US.

Biography for James M. Muellner

How did you find out about NBG and why you want to do this ride?
1. Found you on the Internet and started reading. Came out to Santa Cruz to check you out to make sure it was a real place and the area was really as bike friendly as you claimed. I have become a believer.

2. Being associated with a group dedicated to expanding biking in the USA is a point of pride for me. It would be with honor that someday when biking is an everyday happening for millions of Americans that I could feel I helped in some small way.

Touring experience:
Rode across the US with Tim Kneeland and Assoc. three years ago from Los Angeles, CA to Orlando, Calif. with a group of fifty cyclists. I met some of the greatest people in the world on that trip and it changed my life. 3200 miles. Next I rode up the East coast from mile zero in the Florida Keys to Lubec, Maine with two other cyclists who gave me guidance on how to travel. Again it was an eye opening and extremely rewarding experience. 3000 miles next I rode with my son Jon from Port Townsend, Washington to Minot, ND and finally had a chance to get to know my son. Loved every minute, especially the crossing of Logan Pass, on Going to the Sun Highway, in Glacier National Park, in a snowstorm. 1800 miles. Took a trip to France and rode from Biarritz to Paris with a beautiful, French speaking guide, who taught me how to explore and enjoy the French countryside. 500 miles. Have ridden across Minnesota ten times on the MS Fund Raising TRAM ride 400 miles per time.

Tell us about your bike:
Will be riding a Raven trike. You can see it at http://justtwobikes.com. It is a special version with 24-inch wheels and has 18 speeds. It has a rear cargo bag that carriers all my supplies, including camping gear.

Describe your training regimen:
The training is done primarily in riding to work everyday, a distance of 10 miles each way. I have been trying to increase my speeds a little bit every day. On Saturdays I take some of my customers on a longer bike ride along The Hardwood Bike Trail thru Hugo, MN, it goes north about 35 miles.

How many miles do you ride a year?
It averages about 5,000 miles a year.

Are you car free or interested?
My goal is to be car free and I try to do as much as possible as I can via cycle.

How are you making time for this event?
It requires a real discipline to be car free as you need to allow more time to get to different places. Also, in a car society distance is of little consequence. In a bike society you need to consciously choose to attend functions closer to home. To belong to organizations that is closer.

How many miles do you plan to ride in 2002?
In 2002 I should exceed my 5,000 mile average.

What are your fears about doing this ride?
My main fear is that I will get there too early, so I am carefully selecting a book to have with me to read at the Buckingham Plaza whilewaiting for the parade to Daley Plaza to start.

Do you have any special skills?
My skills are varied. Mechanical engineer, house builder, business owner, inventor, public speaker and organizer.

Are you affiliated with any bike club E-mail groups?
I have no bike club connections as my time is primarily filled with building and riding the cycles we build.

What other activities are you involved in?
Skiing, down hill and cross country and telemarketing. Roller blading, dancing, hiking, swimming and windsurfing.
