The Santa Cruz NBG Fest is one of the world's largest events for cross-country and trans-coastal cyclists and will draw cyclists from all over the US.

Biography for Bob Schwenkler

How did you find out about NBG and why you want to do this ride?
Through my friend Andrew Morton. I think that this is a great cause to support, and I'd like to be a part of it. The timing of this ride also coincides perfectly with my good friend returning to Boise after the ride is over. As far as first rides go, I'd say that this is a good one to choose.

Touring experience:
Two years car free, but no real touring experience yet.

Tell us about your bike:
I have a Bianchi Volpe. There's not much to say about it, though I find that the 700x32 tires it came with are much better for around town riding than other smaller tires.

Describe your training regimen:
I suppose I'm training whenever I go somewhere. Before the ride I'm going to start building up the distance and working up to a ride that is about what I'll be doing while I'm actually touring.

How many miles do you ride a year?
I've only had a cyclometer for 2 months, so I couldn't say.

Are you car free or interested?
Car free.

How are you making time for this event?
By quitting my job.

How many miles do you plan to ride in 2002?
I'll be back in school in September, so I have no idea what will happen although I do plan to ride from Olympia, WA to Portland at least once or twice.

What are your fears about doing this ride?
That my ankle may give me too many problems.

Do you have any special skills?
I speak fluent spanish. I suppose that's pretty special considering how few Americans can speak it well.

Are you affiliated with any bike club E-mail groups?
None.

What other activities are you involved in?
I skateboard, play the guitar, take pictures, and lots of other things that I'm less involved in.

Occupation:
