National Bicycle Greenway (NBG)
Santa Cruz NBG Fest
http://www.bikeroute.com/SCNBGFest

The Santa Cruz NBG Fest is one of the world's largest events for cross-country and trans-coastal cyclists and will draw cyclists from all over the US.

To find out more about NBG Founding Director Martin Krieg's interest in PocketMail, the NBG Fest, and the NBG, our own ace-reporter Angie C. interviewed him by telephone. Here's a transcript of the interview:

AC: How did you hear about PocketMail?
MK: I was over in San Jose at a swing dance where I saw one of the founders of PocketMail, Scott Fullam, pecking away with great interest on this little keyboard. It's backlit screen made it glow in the dark. Out of curiosity, I asked him what it was. And as it turned out, he was a friend with Scot Colburn, our first NBG Advance Scout who already was planning to use his on the ride. We kept talking and [Scott] asked me to contact him.

AC: Why do you use PocketMail and not something else?
MK: I can send my home computer or friends or other colleagues email from any pay phone anywhere and at any time!

AC: How can people interested in NBG events learn more?
MK: Get on our weekly newsletter mailings by sending such a request to Requests@bikeroute.com or by just reading our newsletter archives at: http://www.bikeroute.com/SCNBGFest/SBNFNewsletters/index.html

AC: How can someone help you or the NBG events?
MK: We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization and donations are heartily accepted as well as much needed. Contact me directly at NBG@bikeroute.com. You can also become an NBG member for as little as five dollars.

At our event, we need everything from volunteer Monitors to Hosts. We need people to staff our NBG Booth. We will need helpers at our Bike Valet. If you are a Photographer and might like to help us document this event, please let us know. We need people for both Set Up and Clean Up. Getting down to the brass tacks even a crowd counter would be helpful. Such volunteers will also get an NBG staff t-shirt for the day of the event!
We need to get signs and posters out there. Go to our site and print out the form and post our poster as far and as wide as possible. Here in Santa Cruz, we'd like to hang banners at the two nearby college campuses and from select bridges and between approved light standards. If you have access to school age children that might like to do this as a class project let me know at NBG@bikeroute.com. Or if you or a group of people can help with this, please reply accordingly.

AC: Any real-world advice for anyone trying/doing the same sort of thing (or something similar)?
MK: Do it Now. The hardest part is just thinking about it.

AC: Any complaints or suggestions about PocketMail device & service?
MK: Offer a trade in program that users on older devices can upgrade to newer devices with. This honors your customers by thanking them for their word of mouth advertising that helped to build you.
EDITOR'S NOTE: A program like this is currently available with an existing UPGRADE program offered for a discounted price. If you are interested, please send an email to Upgrade@corp.pocketmail.com for more information.

AC: Do you have any additional comments?
MK: I love my little Pocket Mailer!
