The Band

Australian sensation, FRUIT are on their way to becoming one of the hottest new music exports from Down Under. With 3 frontline women – Susie Keynes, Sam Lohs and Mel Watson. Two of these women wielding electric and acoustic guitars and the other commanding an arsenal of horns. Each of them sings, writes and locks seamlessly to the other. It’s a vocal blend reminiscent of the great harmonisers of our time.

Add to this collaboration the snap lock brotherly groove of the rhythm section: Yanya Boston’s gutsy, rhythmic passion on drums, Brian Ruiz’s groove-laden bass and two more velvet voices.

That is Fruit. Hard to pin down- perhaps best described as acoustic pop, Fruit’s eclectic set also touches funk, blues, rock and groove.

Of outrageous appeal however are the strength of the vocals and the dramatic use of harmonies.

Operating independently since 1995, this music and performance powerhouse has grown from an instantly popular local outfit based in Adelaide, Australia, to an internationally renowned and sort after festival attraction.

From the WOMAD circuit to the Edinburgh Fringe – the U.S. and Canadian Festivals to the outback of home – five years of solid international touring has defined the depth and reach of this band.

Be it heart-lifting ballads, gut wrenching blues, scorching torch or rocky liberation, FRUIT delivers something for everyone, if you like music that fires your imagination, that is...

Australias hottest new band, FRUiT, popped into Pocketmail's San Jose office before starting their tour of the United States. Here's what they had to say:

1. How did you hear about PocketMail?

Yanya: Our drummer Yanya first saw Pocketmail demonstrated in a Strathfield Car Radio store in Adelaide, South Australia long before they became available in Australia. After some further investigation on internet, he was sold on the idea. We flew in to New York City on the first day of our tour and he spent the whole day looking through every major electronics store with no luck.... but finally found a Sharp TM20 in some back alley electronics shop. It wasn't long before all of us kept wanting to use it..............you can imagine him just drawing the line after each of us, for the thousandth time, knocking on his hotel room door and saying "yan.......can I just send a quick......." he is a patient man but even we managed to push him to the edge...... the next tour we all had one and the rest is history.....

2. Why have you selected to use PocketMail and not something else?

Yanya: PocketMail is the best...it's easy.......quick........ its simply designed for email as opposed to being loaded with heaps of features that would never get used. Its not dependant on network coverage and can be used from any phone.... and the cost of the call? Nothing! what more could you ask for?

3. How did you communicate with family and friends before you found out about PocketMail?

Yanya: Either we fought over who got to use our manager's laptop or we were constantly searching for Internet cafes which becomes expensive. Also, with our hectic schedule, it was never practical.

4. How has PocketMail helped you while traveling on the road?

Yanya: We are constantly receiving important urgent information from agents and promoters and its not always practical or quick to fire up the laptop and try to get online. Pocketmail has solved that problem. Not to mention the easy ability to stay in touch with friends and family back home.

5.How can people interested in your band learn more about you and your music?

Yanya: People can take a look at our web site.....www.fruitmusic.com.au. We have recorded 10 albums including some solo projects that some of us have done, and there is a bunch of photo's etc etc you can find some chat line places, one is called Talking Fruit.
And then come to a gig and bring a friend and be prepared to feel good.
