Letters to the Editor
To the Editor:
I can no longer tolerate cold weather, so we winter in Gulf Shores, Ala. This year, when we returned in the first week of November, we learned the sale of our local phone company was completed and we would have to get re-hooked up with our Internet Service Provider. I was given a phone number to call for the hookup. Jason answered the phone and told me there were 57 e-mails waiting for me, and if they were deleted, I would be ready to go. Jason also said, if that doesn't work, call back. It didn't work.
I called back and asked for Jason. The person who picked up the phone assured me Jason was not available. She said further she was fully aware of what Jason had done and she could solve the problem. She had me open "My Computer" and make specified changes. She then said, if this doesn't work, call me. It didn't work.
The third person had me make changes which didn't work.
I talked to a fourth person whose scheme also didn't work. The fifth person said, oh my, you have a lot of problems and hung up on me. Then I called back I got a busy signal.
I contacted the phone company to cancel by Internet hookup and was asked why I was canceling, so I explained what had happened. When queried if I felt what had happened was their fault, I said no, it was my fault for assuming their employees knew what they were doing. The operator said that is fine, and when I get my computer repaired they would get me hooked up again. I said nothing, but the thought that will be a cold day in purgatory crossed my mind. Those who are not computer literate, like me, are at the mercy of those who think they are experts.
I am now the owner of a PocketMail Composer, which costs $250 and includes one year unlimited access from anywhere on the planet using any telephone.
Consumers have choices.
